On September 18-20, 2006 representatives of all GaNano partner institutions participated in the European Workshop on III-Nitride Semiconductor Materials and Devices and in the fifth GaNano project meeting held immediately after the Workshop. The list of participants included:

Tadek Suski from Unipress, Poland was unable to participate for personal/family reasons.

Several more participants from the project partner institutions, especially from the University of Crete and FORTH/IESL participated in the Workshop.

The European Workshop on III-Nitride Semiconductor Materials and Devices (http://www.ew3ns.org) was a great success, bringing together 90 participants from 15 different countries, including 11 EU member or associated states, USA, Japan, Russia and Malaysia. Eight stimulated sessions led by presentations of 8 invited speakers followed a plenary lecture by Theodore D. Moustakas from Boston University, MA, which set the tone for talks and discussions during the Workshop. More information can be found at the Workshop website.

The discussions during the Fifth GaNano meeting focused on achieving the final deliverables of the project, status of application oriented final products and devices, and any deviations from the originally proposed integrated sensing system as the final project deliverable.

The Final Project Meeting was proposed to be held in Munich in late December. EC Project Officers from Brussels would participate in the meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE GANANO WORKSHOP

European Workshop on III-Nitride Semiconductor Materials and Devices
Anissaras Hersonissos, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, September 18-20, 2006

The main goal of this workshop is to bring together experienced researchers and students working in the fields of III-Nitride semiconductor materials and devices, along with industry representatives, and provide a forum for fruitful scientific interaction and education. The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers in Europe to keep pace with the rapidly growing field of semiconductors research, which will continue to revolutionize high-technology products affecting many aspects of our lives.

We invite the submission of abstracts for presentation in the following areas:

THE FOURTH GANANO PROJECT MEETING

Madrid, Spain, Feb. 06-07/2006

Location: UPM, Madrid
Theme: Reports on Accomplishments of the GaNano Project through month 24

On February 6-7, 2005 representatives of all GaNano partner institutions (with the exception of the newcomer Analytik Jena) have participated in the fourth GaNano project meeting. On the picture below, you can see standing from the left:

4rd meeting

Missing from Picture but present: Volker Cimalla, TUM, Germany, Martin Eickhoff, TUM, Germany and Tadek Suski, Unipress, Poland.

Unable to participate: Nikos Chaniotakis, UoC and Stefan Winter, AnalytikJena, Germany

The main theme of the meeting was project accomplishments during the first 24 months of the project, the second annual report and plans for the upcoming (last) year of the GaNano project. Organization of the GaNano workshop in year 3 was also discussed. It was decided to hold the workshop jointly with a PARSEM RTN FP6 project in Crete, in late September 2006.

Thanks to Elias and his group for being wonderful and generous hosts.

GaNano Mid-term Review Meeting, Brussels, BE, July 1, 2005.

The Mid-term project review meeting took place in Brussels on July 1, 2005. Representatives of all eight former partner Institutions as well as Stefan Witner from Analytik Jena (AJ) presented the 18-month accomplishments of the GaNano project to the Scientific Officer, Prof. Antoaneta Folea.

The presentations included the technical progress report achieved within the five Workpackages of the GaNano project followed by the discussion of project management and changes to the exploitation and dissemination plan stemming from the departure of GE and the proposed addition of AJ to the GaNano Consortium.

The evaluation of Mid-term project achievements by the Scientific Officer was very positive and subsequently a Contract amendment with the proposed changes in the make-up of the Consortium was approved.

Third Project Meeting

The Third GaNano project meeting took place in Greece in Heraklion, Creete, on April 21-22, 2005. Other than exchanging information about the scientific progress and accomplishments of the project over its first 15 months, two other primary objectives of the meeting were to clarify the issue of active participation of Partner No 9 (General Electric) in light of the disagreement about the contents of the GaNano Consortum Agreement and to prepare for the Mid Term project assessment review.

In addition to discussing scientific and organizational objectives, the participants of the meeting had the opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage and become acquainted with the local Crete cuisine (see picture below).

3rd meeting 1

3rd meeting 2

Representatives of all GaNano partners participated in the meeting with the exception of Partner No 9 – General Electric (GE). GE’s absence at the meeting made their future participation in the Project questionable. Implications of GE’s potential withdrawal in terms of WP5 (integration of the sensor system) and future exploitation and dissemination plan was discussed. An official letter with the request for withdrawal dated April 21, 2005was received by the GaNano coordinator after the meeting.

Second Project Meeting

The second GaNano project meeting has taken place in Warsaw, on September 10-11, 2004, and was hosted by Unipress.

The minutes and presentations from that meeting can be found on the internal web page.
